Normally mestre Nestor capoeira delivers 3 hours long lectures: 1h:30min of lecture and 1 hour, and 30 min of questions/answers.
Normally he is asked to give a lecture about capoeira as a whole:
"Capoeira, the Brazilian dance-fight-game; history, ritual, philosophy and practice".
But many times he is asked to deliver a "package" of 3 lectures that encompass the main insights in a deeper and expanded form:
1. "Malícia, capoeira philosophy and inner life".
2. "Capoeira's history, from slavery time to the globalization era; a tentative glimpse into the future".
3. "Capoeira's ritual and music, the Malandro and his contribution for a capoeira identity".
Or, he is asked to talk about more specific subjects:
1. "The Rio de Janeiro slave capoeira, 1800-1850"
2. "The Rio de Janeiro malta's capoeira, 1800-1850"
3. "Salvador, tough guys and valentões, 1900-1930"
4. "Mestres Bimba, Pastinha, and Waldemar, the beggining of the academia era, Salvador, 1930-1960"
5. "Recife's capoeira scene: the 'brabos' of the early 1900s"
6. "The birth of contemporary capoeira, Salvador, São Paulo, Rio, 1960-1980"
7. "The expansion of capoeira abroad Brasil, 1970-2000"
8. "Capoeira's ritual and music"
9. "The Malandro philosophy, and his contribution for a capoeira identity"
10. "Sex and sensuality, basic vectors of the cultural clash between young Brazilian capoeira teachers and non-Brazilian cultures".
This last lecture, "Sex and sensuality, basic vectors of the cultural clash between young Brazilian capoeira teachers and non-Brazilian cultures", has been especially successful these last years due to bringing up, and enlightening a bit more, the scenario of en extremely interesting, basic and very different approach on sex and sensuality by different cultures; by different social groups, the "established" and the "street-wise".
Nestor has been giving theorist capoeira lectures, in Brasil and abroad, since 1971 and says:
"Notwithstanding the need of passing information and bringing new insights to others to others, a lecture is not like a 'class' in school; it is a performance like in theatre, a one-man-show on a stage. A lecture is something like a capoeira game, where you have to 'see' and understand what the other player (the audience) is all about and interact based on this knowledge. But at the same time, if you are a good player, you must be efficient, artistic, creative, and (especially) fun".
Nestor graduated as an engineer (ENE-UFRJ, 1969) but worked as such for only two years ("Light Power Company of Rio de Janeiro", 1970/71) when he started to dedicate himself entirely to capoeira.
He has a master's degree (Ritual Roda, mandinga x tele-real, 1995) and a PhD (Jogo corporal e Comunicultura, 2001) in Communication and Culture ("Escola de Comunicação, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro"), under the supervision of Prof. Muniz Sodré, both focusing on capoeira and it's insertion, in Brasil and abroad, in today's so called "globalization era".
It is from his master and PhD (and the vast bibliography that support these papers), and from the "Nestor Capoeira Trilogy", published and being successfully sold in several countries (Brasil Danmark, Holand, USA, France, Poland, Germany, Finland), that mestre Nestor Capoeira takes the material for his lectures.
